President Appoints Five New High Court Judges; Three for Chhattisgarh, Two Additional Judges for Gauhati HC

The Central Government on Tuesday announced the appointment of five new judges to two High Courts, following the constitutional process of consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments through his official X account on September 8.

Under the latest appointments, three judicial officers have been appointed as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court, while an advocate and a judicial officer have been appointed as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court.
The appointments come after recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium. The Collegium had approved the three Chhattisgarh names at its meeting on August 18, 2026.

Three new Judges appointed to Chhattisgarh High Court
The President has appointed the following judicial officers as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court:
- Santosh Sharma
- Sushma Sawant
- Sudhir Kumar
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended all three judicial officers for elevation to the High Court on August 18. The Centre has now cleared their appointments.
The appointments are significant for the Chhattisgarh High Court, which has been functioning with a substantial number of vacancies. According to a report published on Tuesday, the High Court has a sanctioned strength of 22 judges and was functioning with 11 judges before these appointments.
Two Additional Judges appointed to Gauhati High Court
The President has also appointed:
- Nchumbeno Mozhui, Advocate
- Helen Dawngliani, Judicial Officer
as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court.
Their names had also been cleared by the Supreme Court Collegium in August. Contemporary reports on the Collegium decision confirm that Mozhui was recommended from the Bar while Dawngliani was recommended from the judicial service.
President exercises constitutional powers
According to the announcement shared by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, the appointments were made by the President in exercise of powers conferred by the Constitution of India and after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
The development marks another step towards filling vacancies in the country’s constitutional courts and strengthening their judicial capacity.
The Centre has recently moved on a series of recommendations concerning appointments to the High Courts. With Chief Justice appointments across all 25 High Courts recently notified, attention is also turning towards vacancies in the Supreme Court.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal publicly announced the appointments on Tuesday evening, providing the names and respective High Courts.
The announcement reflects the government’s continuing processing of judicial appointments after recommendations are received through the Collegium system.
The appointment of additional judges is especially relevant in High Courts facing increasing caseloads, as filling judicial vacancies can contribute to greater bench strength and faster disposal of pending matters.
