Nirbhaya Case: Its a Women’s Day for India
New Delhi VON News- The time is over. The much awaited day has come and justice done. All four convicts of the 2012 delhi gang rape and murder case, were hanged till death earlier today, at 5:30 a.m.
It has been more than seven years, since a 23-year old paramedical student was brutally gang raped in a moving bus, all four convicts- Mukesh Singh, Akshay Singh Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma were hanged till death today at 5:30 a.m. in Tihar jail, after the Supreme Court refused to entertain them by dismissing their grant relief and stay on execution of death penalty.
This isn’t just a historic day for India but for Tihar jail as well, as the four were hanged simultaneously.
All four were declared dead around 6 a.m half an hour after they were hanged. Director General of Tihar jail, Sandeep Goel said, ” (A) doctor has examined (them) and declared dead.”
The four were convicted in Nirbhaya case. A case that brought the whole nation together and forced the government to bring in toughest laws in crimes against women. The crime took place on 12 December night, when a 23-year old paramedical student was brutally gang raped in a moving bus.
She boarded the bus along with her male friend. After boarding, both were assaulted by six people The girl was brutally gang raped. She died after few days at Singapore Hospital. This brutal case led to country wide-spread protest and forced the government to bring in the toughest laws in crimes against women.
In the last 24 hours, some of the four convicts were moved to different courts urging relief from death penalty. All the courts, including the Patiala House Delhi court,the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court had refused to intervene and dismissed the stay on execution of death penalty.
After the Supreme Court rejected the final plea at 3:30 a.m.all four were hanged at 5:30 a.m in Tihar. Their bodies were then sent for post-mortem.
