Sanjay Kumar Verma is the new DGP of Maharashtra

Sanjay Kumar Verma was appointed Maharashtra’s new Director General of Police (DGP). The development came a day after Rashmi Shukla was removed from the post on a directive of the Election Commission of India (ECI), an official said.

Verma is a 1990-batch IPS officer. He is serving as the Director General – Legal and Technical. He is set to retire in April 2028.
He had headed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which conducted a probe into the killing of communist leader and rationalist Govind Pansare in 2015.

He will take charge of the post from Mumbai Commissioner of Police Vivek Phansalkar, who was given additional charge as the DGP on November 4.

The EC approved Verma’s name from the panel of three IPS officers listed by the chief secretary of the state.

Shukla, the first woman DGP of the state, was removed as the state police chief following complaints from opposition parties. The Congress had approached the EC seeking Shukla’s transfer for her alleged role in tapping phones of Opposition leaders.
